It sounds like you need the Gentoo Essentials CDs then as you will need a recent portage tree and the packages to compile.

It does not use RPM, plus you will never have to find another dependency thanks to apt.

No, the authors assume you know enough about Linux to troubleshoot it yourself. The install guide is fairly easy to follow and quite thorough, you just have to know enough about what you're doing to follow it properly.
