Broke College Students Needs SuSE 9.0. Can Anyone Help?

Hi All,
I would very much like to get the next version of my favorite linux distro, SuSE. I have been a satisfied SuSE user since 7.3 (7.3,8.0,8.1,8.2).

Would Anyone care to help me out by making the ISOs available [IF AND ONLY IF THIS IS LEGAL TO DO]

I Read somewhere that SuSE 9.0 has been released in Europe but not yet in the United States (where I live).

So if you cna be kind enough to help, please let me know.

Thanx before hand!

According to Suse they don't even give out ISO's themselves so by someone else giving this out, I do believe this is against their license agreement, etc.

Linuxquestions.org will not participate in the warez of software and the such.

Regards.

Dear TrickyKid, Please read above. I said "if and only if this is legal". I obviously won't pursue this any further if it can be demonstrated that sharing ISOs is illegal. However, I think it is safe to assume it IS legal unless it can be demonstrated (with evidence) otherwise. If someone can prove to me it is illegal, I will shut up. I do not wish to be involved in Warez or piracy (which is why I chose Linux to begin with).

Actually, SuSE's license only stops people from selling disks or ISOs. Most of their distro is under the GPL, except for Yast and Yast 2. I quote from their license agreement for Yast
"It is forbidden to reproduce or distribute data carriers which have
been reproduced without authorisation for payment without the prior
written consent of SuSE Linux AG or SuSE Linux. Distribution of
the YaST 2 programme, its sources, whether amended or unamended in full
or in part thereof, and the works derived thereof for a charge require
the prior written consent of SuSE Linux AG."

From Suse.com Yast License: "It is forbidden to reproduce or distribute data carriers which have been reproduced without authorisation for payment without the prior written consent of SuSE Linux AG or SuSE Linux. Distribution of the YaST programme, its sources, whether amended or unamended in full or in part thereof, and the works derived thereof for a charge require the prior written consent of SuSE Linux AG."

Carlywarly, you mentioned this correctly but interpreted it wrong. For anyone to redistribute an ISO with Yast, you need Suse's prior consent and approval. That payment is meant to be payment to Suse to redistribute Yast.

Unless you create an ISO without Yast and any other proprietary software on it, redistributing Suse on an ISO is illegal and against their License agreement.

This is one reason it is so hard to find a download site with iso's, cause they don't want to break Suse's license and the law. If they allowed for you to give it away for free, well, then, iso downloads would be everywhere, like at distrowatch.com and linuxiso.org... and so on...

So to answer the question once again.. YES, its illegal and you would be participating in warez, illegal software distribution, etc.

There is nothing on the german SuSE website that would indicate it.

Oct 15th for Europe (German SuSE press release), 24th for international release (English press release).

oh, my bad (on release date) then.
As for The YAST license I think it is hazy. It could be interpreted both ways (as we have just experienced). However, I will try an FTP intsall then (even though FTP is the most unreliable protocol ever!)

Its not hazy, its just hard to understand. But basically trust me, you can't give out copies of Suse if Yast is part of it.. That's why you don't find sites with iso downloads of Suse. If it weren't the case, you'd see tons of sites giving out the iso just like all the other distro's and such...

I c. Well I do not wish to participate in Warez or software piracy, much less getting LQ.org involved in such a mess. I will try an FTP install, but usually FTP is a very unreliable protocol.
