X11 Screen Resolution

Hello there. I my screen resolution is 800x600 and I would like to change it to 1280x1024. The only problem is when I change the screen resolution, it just makes the picture bigger and makes it so I have to scroll to see the rest of the screen. How would I increase the screen resolution without making it so I have to scroll to see all of the screen?

System:
Slackware 12.0
ATI Radeon 7000 32mb

That means 1280x1024 is not fit for your monitor.
Has your monitor been correctly detected?
What type of monitor are you using?
specs?
driver for card?
Post the relevant details of /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Best

you can not get the high resolutions directly with ati graphic cards.configure the monitor properly and see if it helps.if that does not work then you will have to install the ati driver and then configure the resolution.
