Windows broken in Gnome

Hey everybody,

Running Ubuntu 7.10 / Gnome / Compiz / Metacity decorator

Simple yet strange problem, really. When I open any window, lets say a terminal, it seems to put the window in position 0,0 (Upper left) just below the panel.

Problem is, the menu for the window (File, edit, view, etc) seems to be disjoint from the window itself. That menu seems to hang out in the upper left while I continue to use the window. All the buttons and menus even work fine.

Here is a screen shot showing a terminal window open. Notice the window, and it's menu sitting in the top-left:

Hopefully someone has seen this before, heh.
Thanks!

Can't solve it but I have seen ? similar- Debian 4.0, various boot problems but sometimes Gnome loaded with menus missing altogether. If I hadn't decided to give Debian a rest for now I'd use another desktop, make sure that was OK then remove & reload gnome.
