When I grab the scroll bar or use the mouse scroll wheel the window scrolls, but very slowly. It appears like a wave hesitation. Does this sound like a refresh rate that's too slow, or something else? Maybe the vesa driver? The nvidia driver is not installed yet. This happens in all applications, but only when the window is big. If I resize the window smaller, the scrolling is normal.
The vesa driver probably can't update the display fast enough. It doesn't use graphic acceleration.
That's kinda what I thought. I also thought that it might be memory, but flash graphics in web browser show fine, and I don't have problems with Mepis on another partition which also uses vesa. It must be how Ubuntu interprets the driver.
If you have an NVIDIA card, just install their proprietary driver.
You will notice the improvement.
Thanks for your input on my other thread "Installing video drivers" where I finally had to get a GeForce 7300LE which at least works w/ the vesa driver. I found that installing Ubuntu/dapper on another partition that the "nv" driver recognized the new card and it works great "out of the box". But Edgy does not id the card for the 'nv' driver. So I'm in the process of trying to get the correct driver installed, but can't seem to id the right driver that is compatible "out of the box" w/ Edgy. Nvidia's latest driver for the 7300 is 185.18.36, but this isn't even mentioned on the ubuntu driver pages. It appears that I'll need to get nvidia-glx or the glx-legacy driver w/development files to work with Edgy. I'm still grappling with this, obviously! Any suggestions are welcome.
Visit the nvidia website. If your card is old, you may need the installer for the legacy driver. You need the kernel source and compiling tools installed as well. Although the nv driver while not accelerated isn't too bad. It will certainly be better than the vesa generic driver.
