Basically, when I'm in Firefox, or any other scrolling app, scrolling is somewhat blocky compared to (gulp) Windows. Is there a way to smooth this blockiness out?
Could it be a driver problem? What graphics card do you have? I usually get that "effect", even in Windows, when using generic drivers for my Nvidia card. This seems to be more common with Nvidia cards than ATI's for some reason. Once the drivers are installed, everything works fine. But no matter what I do, the GUI in Linux seems to always be slightly less responsive than Windows.
Have you tried turning down 'swappiness' a bit? Default is often set to 60 (depending on distro) and 30 or 15 gives a better user experience in marginal conditions.
(Of course, if this is nothing to do with swap needing to happen before you get what you want, this won't help.)
This isn't abmornal scrolling in Linux. All of my machines do it. But Windows seems to scroll a little smoother, and I just thought there'd be a way to adjust the scroll acceleration?
At least for Firefox, you could try the SmoothWheel extension.
I use it and I like it, the scrolling smoothness feeling is much better than the default one.
You will have to disable the default one in Firefox Preferences, and to adjust the values of the extension parameters to your convenience. If you want I can tell you the values I use for what I find is a good feeling.
