I am trying to share files between a number of WinXP/ Win2K PC's and a 64 bit Suse Linux 10.2 PC.

All the Win machines see each other and share files. I cannot see any of the Win machines from Suse or see the Linux machine from Windows.

I have a Netgear router which has IP addresses assigned for each PC.

I am running KDE as desktop and using the Network Browser returns message "Unable to find workgroups in your local network. This might be caused by an enabled firewall".

I have turned off the firewall in Linux and WinXp but still receive the same message.

I have installed and tried to use smb4k to browse the network but it will not detect any network computers. I have tried to mount shares manually in smb4k but the shares vanish after a few seconds

I can ping the WinXp PC's from Linux and ping Linux from any WinXP machine.

I have tried setting hostname and domain name using YAST DNS and Hostnames as well as Windows Domain Membership. These all match between XP and Suse and are the same case.
Still unable to share files between XP and Suse.

I have followed the instructions at http://www.swerdna.net.au/linhowtosa...groupsuse.html but am still unable to share files.

My smb.conf file is:
[global]
usershare allow guests = Yes
usershare max shares = 100
workgroup = mshome
netbios name=AMD3600
domain master = no
preferred master = Yes
local master = yes
os level = 65

Be sure that the computers are in the same workgroup and that the firewall isn't blocking it. (clear the firewall rules to be sure.)
Try to list the shares first on the linux machine.
Also first try to connect from the linux machine itself.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong but am unable to get any share working between XP and Suse Linux 10.2. I had similar problems in 10.0 and 10.1. Suse 9.2 worked seamlessly.

I would like to completely remove all networking changes I have tried and start again.

Spent too much time trying to get this working so have decided to use a flash drive instead.

just paste the content of hte /etc/samba/samba conf somethign

modify a bit the end

/etc/init.d/samba restart


the samba is very easy to set up normally & works very well...

I have tried to set up smb.conf following the postings suggested. I understood about 1 in 10 of the parameters given and had no idea of what values were required. The comments are only helpful if you already know what the parameters mean.

I have ip addresses for both PC's, common workgroup, userids and passwords. Why is it so difficult to share?

I have removed samba and will continue to use the flash drive for data transfer.
