Okay I have a problem. I have KDM installed from 3.5.6 repos (upgraded a week or so ago) and to do that - because I wanted GNOME off - I had to downgrade a few packages such as kcontrol and kdebase-kio-plugins. Now I'm getting strange results in my logging screen (from Ctrl-Alt-F7, Ctrl-Alt-F9 is my Xserver) which say:

This is after I symlinked the KDM startup file into my runlevel directories so it should be starting up at the bottom of the boot process. But its not. This has happened multiple times and its really starting to annoy me -- What's going on?

Its changed your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and it cant start the x windows system.
Go to xorg site for ways to reconfigure the file from the command line . The script file to do this is already on your system , or look in the file for the device screen 0 and display0 and see what you can change
Also try startx and kde commands

Perhaps your Xorg.0.log has more information?
