startx crashes after kbuildsycoca on gentoo laptop

I recently emerged xorg and kdebase on my acer aspire 5050 laptop. there are no kde commands besides kdeinit. kdm and startkde aren't commands. whenever i do startx as a regular user (i have exec initkde in .xinitrc), x crashes, and this comes up in the log:

kbuildsycoca running...

waiting for X server to shut down kdeinit: Fatal IO error: client killed
kdeinit: sending SIGHUP to children
etc...

Since X is crashing, I'm assuming it's a problem with the video card (ATI Radeon Xpress 1100). I used an xorg.conf that someone else with the same computer had. I followed this guide http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ATI_Drivers , but it did not work. Any suggestions?

Arrow

Can you try a
Code:
startx | tee startx.log
and post the contents of startx.log here, so we can see what the error is?
