Start up an application to a specific workspace? (gnome)

Is there any way to start up an application on a specific workspace? For example, I want to start an xterm window on workspace 3, or I want to start a calculator program on the window to the right of my current one.

I am running RHEL 6.0 (gnome)

Thanks

There is a compwiz way and a metacity way I think. The thing is I am pretty sure this was done many many years ago since the workspace has been around so long. I get the feeling it is like display 1:1 or some easy way. Someone may be able to remember how it was done when it first came out.

I don't think it can be done with basic Gnome. There is this
http://live.gnome.org/DevilsPie
although I've never tried it.

I don't know how to set desktop number from command line in Gnome, but in KdeWM from series 4.xx one just need to set Desktop in program's window menu "Advanced/Additional program settings".
I am sure it should be something similar in Gnome windows managers.

@jefro the second number in DISPLAY variable is a screen number if display has several screens. It is not a desktop number.
