Scaling windows for virtual resolution

im running linux on a hp 1030nr netbook. ive got about 8 inches of screen, and a screen resolution of 1024x600. most applications open up and fill the screen, and make it impossible for me to do anything because the buttons at the bottom are cut off..

i recently read this article ( http://mydellmini.com/forum/virtuall...ion-t2179.html ) and saw that mac osx provides a way to scale a window to make it fit on a desktop...

is this possible in linux? can someone direct me to a website or a howto?

google searches just keep returning the link above (for me anyways)

thanks in advance,
-[iV]

Not on a standard way.

However, I know that compiz can scale windows via a plugin and using opengl, I have no idea how functional that is, though. But it might woth a shot.

You can also try to alleviate the problem by using a widget style that has narrower widgets so the window will be slightly smaller. You could also use a virtual desktop that's bigger than your physical display.

Also, if you use fvwm there's a module called FvwmScroll that can wrap the windows into containers where you can scroll to see the different parts of a window when it doesn't fit in your screen.
