how do I get to and burn a new distro?

Hi,

I'm using Linux Mint 9 and thought I'd try PCLinuxOS. I downloaded the version I wanted and found it under 'tools, downloads' in Firefox. It seemed to come in two parts: 'isolinux 13.6mb' and livecd.sqfs'.

I then selected 'extract' and the found it under the 'home file' as 'isolinux'.

What do I do now? I don't seem to have an option of burning the distro to a cd.

The file you are looking for will end with .iso so that you can use your regular CD burner to burn the image to CD. Under Windows, I would use DeepBurner Free to make the CD. You don't need to extract the image contents first. Under Linux I use K3B to burn the image to CD.

Ah, yes, I do have a file ending in .iso in my Firefox downloads panel. But I can't find any command about burning to a CD.

Left clicking, double or single produces nothing, and right clicking only gives 'go to download page' and 'copy download link'. If I put a blank cd in the drive and open Brasero, for instance, nothing is itemised at all for burning.

I'm at a loss here.

Try this link:

http://ftp.nl.freebsd.org/os/Linux/d...de-2010.11.iso

I have no idea what you downloaded before, but I don't think you have the right file.

mlangdn,

I've downloaded pclinuxos-kde-2010.11.iso using your link. Thanks for that.

It's in Firefox tools, 'downloads' as: isolinux 13.3 mb folder
livecd-sqfs 683 mb sqfs document

I haven't touched it from there. What do I do now please?

You don't want to extract the ISO. Open Brasero and burn as an image file, NOT data file.

I'm still stuck here. I have the download in 'Tools' 'downloads' but can't get further. No amount of clicking gets me an option to 'burn to disk'.

I've opened Brasero but PCLinuxOS isn't listed as available for burning. I think I've got to get the file off Firefox downloads into something else. What, I do not know.

Thanks for telling me that I have to burn an image file. I'd have thought it was a data file.

The download list from firefox shows what you have downloaded, but there no "in" to be. The download location probably defaults to your home folder. Right click on the file in the downloads list and select "Open Containing Folder". Should take you right there. In the General Options tab of Firefox, you'll find where to set the "save" folder and can see what the current setting is.

Well, the 'containing folder' in Firefox downloads is greyed out.

Sorry, I posted the above inadvertently. My current save option is 'Downloads' with the option of 'desktop'

Is the file in your Downloads folder then?

No, it isn't in my Home directory, Downloads folder. In fact, there's nothing in that folder and there should be. And I've now discovered that there's nothing at all in the Firefox downloads folder either. Also I've lost the location toolbar in Firefox browser so I've had to type Linux Questions into Google to get here.

There's obviously something wrong with my computer or OS installation. I may have to re-install. So what I'll do is wrap up this thread now, fix what is wrong if I can, and try again with a download, using the instructions that you've all kindly given me. I've learnt a lot.

Many thanks. I'll let you know how I get on.

All is well, now. I've re-installed and, using your stuff, have burnt to a cd okay.

Dunno what was wrong or how I lost a lot. Still, I suppose that's computing.

Many thanks for helping me out.

Glad you got it sorted! Sometimes, its the simplest thing that gets us out of kilter, and not ever knowing exactly what happened.
