Font encoding problem in Thunderbird

Hello together. Although I visited this forum already several times for certain issues, it's my first time now that I actually post something by myself.

Shortly to my setup: I'm using
- Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon (3.0.7) 64bit
- Linux Kernel 4.4.0-83-generic
- Thunderbird 52.7.0 (64bit)

A couple of days ago, Thunderbird started showing almost all of my emails in a very strange way (empty squares instead of characters). Also, today I recognized that my KeePass2 installation cannot be started anymore.

Code:
~ $ keepass2
System.ArgumentException: The requested FontFamily could not be found [GDI+ status: FontFamilyNotFound]
  at System.Drawing.GDIPlus.CheckStatus (Status status) <0x40a8d7f0 + 0x00753> in <filename unknown>:0

I searched now for days through the internet but couldn't find any solution for my problem.
Do you have any hint for me how to tackle that issue?

Thanks a lot in advance.

PS.: Is there a way to upload screenshots?

I'd guess that you've done an update and a font has changed its name. Run Thunderbird and use the menu Edit - Preferences to change the messages font to something that's available. KeePass is supposed to use the default font, but the Linux port has a bad reputation. Have you tried the KeePass information centre?

First, thanks for your reply, DavidMcCann.
I already tried to change the font in the TB preferences. The mail header got displayed again afterwards. But the actual e-mail content is still f***ed up :-\
The KeePass info centre didn't really help me, unfortunately.
Is there a way to undo changes on the systemwide font settings/names?

We could try to figure out what changed within the last few days, at least regards package installation/updates.

Could you please paste the output from the following command from a couple of days before the date when you first experienced the issue up to the current date.

Code:
cat /var/log/apt/history.log
Also, I would highly recommend that you install TimeShift and set it up to make regular snapshots of your system. That way you can easily rollback to a previous snapshot when issues like this occur.
