Fedora 9 Laptop missing desktop icons

Hello all!
the question of the hour is this...
on my laptop Fedora9 i am missing all of my desktop icons. i manually go in to: System | About this computer | system monitor
and kill the nautilus process.
once it re-spawns everything is fine.

is there a reason tat this keeps happening? 20% of the time everything comes up just fine, it would be nice if it worked 100% of the time...

Thanks
