Desktop headache's... KDE writes too small Gnome forgets the resolution

This problem has been driving me crazy for quite a long time, I tried posting about it Ubuntu forums and here in the Ubuntu section but so far I've gotten complete and utter silence, so I'll try it here with the hope someone will actually see this post.

My GNOME keep logging in at 640x480 resolution from some reason even though I always change it to 1280x1024, after the restart he just forgets the configuration and goes back to the small annoying 640x480. Same thing happens with KDE only with KDE I cant change the resolution back because the blasted writing is so incerdibly tiny that I cant see anything... the text looks like dots and the real dots(.) are invisible... I cant find where the font setting, because the font is too damn small! all the applications and menu's and EVERYTHING in KDE has the same tiny font problem its driving me crazy trying to decrypt what im clicking on!

Both the issues began after I upgraded my Ubuntu to Gutsy Gibbon via the apt-get upgrade command (something which gave me problems quite alot in my past)

Can somebody, please help me get rid of this damn problem?

Thanks.

EDIT:

Nvm I had it, I'm reinstalling it back to Edgy Eft... the hell with Gibbon.

Most likely the monitor

Hi,

If KDE and Gnome are both doing this, the most likely culprit is the monitor or the display card, not the visual environment. The monitor communicates the resolution to the display card, which in turn passes information to the applications; if the monitor lies, or one of the pins on the cable is bent, or the card can't detect the signal because of a ROM problem on the card, you can get a false resolution read at the application level and get the result you're describing.

First, check the pins on the monitor to make sure you haven't got one of them bent. If they're all straight, try borrowing a monitor from a friend for a day, hook it up to your machine, and see if the behavior changes. My guess is that it will. If it doesn't, try swapping out the display card (this will take some reconfiguration).

Hope this helps.

Phil W.

Oh, PS: since this started when you downloaded a kernel upgrade, it could easily be related to the display driver. I don't know anything about Ubuntu or Gutsy Gibbon, but I imagine there might be a driver upgrade for your particular display card. Check that before spending any money on a display card.
