Controlling linux desktop using a gamepad

I am using Ubuntu 7.04 and trying to figure if there is any possibility of using an USB GamePad (10 button) to control the desktop. I mean if I can use the Game Pad as a track ball ?

I can use the gamepad in various linux games, but want to explore further possibilities and if any one has idea about this please post here!

Thanks, Kirtimaan
