Can not get xserver to start....RHEL4

Hello all,

I have got a system that runs RHEL4 and is deployed as squid. I usually do not need to run xserver so it boots it into run level 3 all the time. But I needed gnome terminal for some browsing so I just tried to login into GUI but X failed to start. It had booted into 5 before and there were no changes made into xorg.conf. I tried to figure but could not find the reason. So just deleted the xorg.conf and tried to rebuild it by system-config-display. But there is this error that it shows as the output of this command:

Trying with card: Intel 845
xconf.py: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server :17.0.
--display=:1: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server :17.0.

Any inputs will be appreciated.

Code:
X -configure
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
Try that as root.
