So on the livecd, can I use the Root Name and password ??

that depends, some LiveCD's allow this from the prompt, on Knoppix, entering "su -" is enough to get root rights.

that needs the root password. A Root password for THIS purpose only (IMHO) exists on an installed system, not a LiveCD...

Is there a good reason to do all of this? Network printing requires Root password and Root rights to configure everything...

ok, I didn't know that either, being a newbie...but I found that out from another forum. And yeah, it worked.

I think there are TWO EXCELLENT reasons :

first: IF THE PRINTER PAGE on this program WORKED AS INTENDED, I would not have to go thru all
this, right?

Second: I am trying different distro's ...to find one that is easy to use for a non-tech or Geek at home on his local network, and don't want to keep spending hundreds of dollars on Microsoft Windows.

Didn't have this much hassle with other Distro's so I'll just move on.

Yes, but a password authentication is a process that gets data from TWO points: you typing it in and a stored bit that has to be compared with what you type in...that has to come from the current OS...and (guess what) that is the one one the CD/DVD you're currently using...

Join the club, THAT is one of the first questions ANY Live CD user asks...and, to make stuff more fun...some LiveCD's just assume you're the Root to start with. Typing "whoami" helps to find out who you are on the system...

touché...but a LiveCD is (IMHO) a reflection of an installed system where stuff does work...because there is a hard drive behind it, not a CD...
Maybe, testing on a USB stick could help...it's like a drive, be it slower...but you should be able to persist your settings on it...

Hmm, I use Xubuntu now...pretty much everything worked out of the box. If you do need to set up a network printer, it can be done. I did that succesfully. I did use a networked (old) PC that served as a data store, a media server end a print server...it's pretty easy to do, really...
No sweat, as I said, we're all (ALL, believe me) here to help you out, and we love doing it...
