[I've posted about similar mic problems sometime earlier, but now it's a different box and I'm not sure if the causes are the same, so here goes.]
alsamixer repots:
Card: NVidia nForce2
Chip: Realtek ALC650 rev 3
The microphone setting isn't muted, it's set as the recording channel and set on 100%. Still, it doesn't budge (but it does on Windows). Everything else (sound-related) works fine.
It's intersting to note that Audacity won't even record silence. It just flashes red. The native GNOME sound recording utility crashes.
I've searched around the forum a bit, and tried various tricks people suggested, but to no avail. Any ideas/similar expiriences?
I do have a very similar problem with kernel 2.4.26 on slackware 10.
nforce2 chipset, using onboard sound card.
Sound works fine with ALSA, but I never succeed in recording with KDE 3.2.3 sound recorder or Krec. It starts properly and record silent.
Nope. Same thing happened in Gentoo when I got ALSA up according to their docs. In fact, I'm not even sure it works now (with alsa and arts technically working, I get sound in GNOME and KDE just fine).
My current kernel is 2.6.7-r11-gentoo. Very weird, and just as annoying.
I have a similar problem. Microphone works through the speakers, but no recording. Cannot speak in skype. My system: Mandrake 10.1 DE, soundblaster 5:1 live!.
Mandrake 10 Community
on a
Dell Optiplex GX1 PIII with integrated Crystal Audio 4236 sound adapter
To get the sound working goto KDE control panel / install software
and install sndconfig from the distribution CDs.
In a terminal execute sndconfig. It will configure modules.conf
Then goto KDE control centre / configure desktop / sound
and ensure that the sound adapter is setup correctly, and test it.
I had a lot of problems trying to get Skype up and running.
In the end I resorted to a PCI soundblaster chipset sound adapter inorder to get
full duplex (play and record) operating capability.
I recommend installing a known sound adapter under Mandrake, at least that way
you know that you have a fighting chance.
Yes installing known stuff is always a plus. I got it working by running alsaconf again. I went into drakconf and made sure I was using alsa drivers for my sound card. I then ran alsaconf as root and went through everything. alsaconf set my mic level to zero so i used kmix to bring it back up and it works with no problem I can now use Teamspeak and Skype!
