Unhappy Unable to boot from kernel image on Sun Netra 240

Hi there,

I'm trying to install Gentoo Linux (2.6.24-r7) via terminal on a Netra 240 (originally running Solaris). I'm able to boot from the Universal CD 2008, but after compiling and installing, I get the following error on reboot.

Code:
[ 51.903873] VFS: Cannot open root device "sda1" or unknown-block(0,0)
[ 51.988581] Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
[ 52.098383] 0300 483180 hda driver: ide-cdrom
[ 52.160136] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
[ 52.268801] Press Stop-A (L1-A) to return to the boot prom
Can anyone offer any hints on what the issue may be?
Apologies if this has been asked before, I've searched through the forum but unable to find anything that can help.

Ben

This

Code:

seems to suggest that you either forgot to include the needed driver for your SATA chipset in the kernel (or the initramfs, if you use one). Note that, at this stage, you can't load modules from the disk, so make sure it's statically linked into the kernel (not as 'm', but as '*'). The same goes for whatever fs driver(s) you will need to boot.

Thanks!

Cheers, for the reply. Felt a bit out of my depth, so tried a Debian distro and it worked without a hitch. not sure why it should make a difference unless it was a kernel issue and they use different versions. Will check.
