I think they still use IRIX engines burning some pretty big stack of crays to do many of the special effects. I guess they could have changed over by now.

Pretty sure that is because the product placement people are aiming the marketing for the demographics of the show.

Recently I've seen what looked like gnome 3 on 'Silent Witness'. If anyone cares, I might even be able to dig up a screen shot of the desktop in silent witness.
