Lightbulb What is hurd?

Okie, I stumble onto this website http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/docs.html.

It's about hurd. Very interesting to me. I just wonder, can I dl it as in source, compile it in linux (distro such as rh9.0) and then make, make install it. Test it as a virtual kernal, and play around with it. By the way i meant install it in user directory as user's permission, not as - root.

Is that possible.. or do I have to install it's as a distro (os) itself?

The site is very blur about it.. so I just want to ask is there an experience user of hurd in here who can gives me tips about it. Thanks very much if you can help.

"GNU Mach can be compiled or cross-compiled easily. The only package you are not likely to have installed already is MiG, the Mach interface generator."

I have never tried HURD, but from what I quickly read here..it seems that you would compile it as usual, set grub up to boot it...and point it at your normal linux distribution.

edit: or maybe not. Here's the installation guide:

Can't use partitions larger than 2GB?!?? This thing is really not ready for prime-time. Have fun.

Yes.

You should set up hurd on its own partition. hurd seems to have trouble booting deep into a disk so you should make the hurd partition the first on the disk.

You can buy a GNU/hurd install disk here:
