What does being a Debian Maintainer entail?

I have no programming/scripting language at all. I would like to ontribute to debian(as it's the distro I use), but I don't know what maintaining a package would entail? How much time is required? Do I need programming/scripting experiance? Other things to think about?

I am not a maintainer, but know of one. I do, however run Debian stable, and have looked into just the things you are asking about. has many suggestions for ways to help.

There are also several IRC channels on that Debian developers and maintainers use for communicating.

Hope this helps
