Hahahaha. Just kidding. I'm in my VB class(waste of time). Finished my project in about five minutes(first one in a week... getting hard to bring myself to do this garbage). Just thought I'd pop in. It's a shame that people can't even copy the example from the book without messing it up. -_-
Hey, basic is good for alot of things. Wait, just Ti graphing calcs. LOL. VB is a drag it makes graphical programming a mostly point and click operation.
The form painter in Qt Designer is just like it... but hey, if it's C++ we're talking about nobody's going to complain it's too "click and drool".
BASIC's biggest problem is the stigma associated with its name, and as a beta tester for VB 1.0 and VB/DOS -- yes, I was a hardcore Microsoftie 14 years ago -- I urged MS to keep the original code name, Thunder.
There is a project called gambas. It is very similar to VB and you can write programs for Linux using Basic. It has an interface and forms similar to VB.
I think it's cool for people who want a very simple environment to create Linux programs.
I know this is unorthodox to say in the "M$ IS TEH SUX0RZ" environment of LQ, but it is my opinion and I will say it.
Visual Basic has a place. Although C++ is much more powerful (though with the advent of .NET that has been taken care of a little), VB makes it exceptionally easy and fast to make a GUI. If I want a program done fast, my options are to wrestle with some graphical toolkit like GTK+, QT, or, on Windows, MFC, or to do it insanely quickly with VB. It is still possible to write the GUI with VB and the logic with C++. Also, they are obviously not going to, say, make the next version of Word in VB, but it does have its place.
