Question Tiger,Longhorn-->64 bit Linux?

hi,

I was reading an article on Tiger,Longhorn- the 64 bit OS's.

the article also mentions that 64-bit Linux has been there since "years".
I did some 'googling' but cud not find anything on 64-bit linux OS.(except some stuff on servers).Which are these?

If indeed it has been years, why are these releases creating so much buzz in the market?

Any info appreciated.

cheers,
Jared

PSlz excuse if the question sounds dumb.

64bit linux has been here for years. Almost all distros have 64bit editions.

I know that off the top of my head the following distros do:

Mandrake
Fedora
Debian
Gentoo
and many, many more.

Linux in its effort for multi platform must be 64-bit compatible. platforms like ppc (as i hear) are 64-bit and so 64-bit Linux and necessary programs are 64-bit compatible for them, as well as 32-bit compatible for others.

its all hype really, since 64-bit x86, people are just dying to get there hands on x86-64-bit and a OS(windows). In all honesty, if it wasn't for windows, people would probably be using other hardware that is 64-bit by now, but windows is x86 only, so people are locked. Plus they don't know of Linux usually, so to them 64-bit is a new thing.
