I would guess that you have missed that APM is not too bad on Linux these days and that most hardware over the last decade supports using it.

To be clear, PCI cards are turned off, all drives are turned off, the monitors suspend and about the only things left on are power to the actual CPU and RAM. For the most part everything else is turned off. So unless we are going to quibble over a few mu a night, I don't see the problem here.

I still see no reason not to shut down your desktop computer overnight. The only times I leave it on is when I start something that doesn't require intercation and takes a long time, usually big downloads. Even then, if I see it will obviously finish after a certain time, I just use the shutdown command with a time argument.

I admit I forgot about the impact of power management. But has anyone measured how much it uses? I've got an energy meter - somewhere - so maybe I could measure on my system. My old machine used something like 100-120 W in normal idle running, but that was really ancient and probably had basically no APM.
(And I was thinking of standard desktops - laptops and low-(electrical)power desktops will use a lot less.
Personally, my desktop gets shut down overnight because it's in my bedroom and the fans would keep me awake otherwise! (Some can be speed reduced, but I can't directly control the GPU or PSU fans).

I too have forgot about fans as mine all shut off on my desktop when APM kicks in and it runs quiet as a mouse at other times too (or should I say more quiet as I had a mouse in my bedroom the other night that woke me up lol).

Maybe we should just unplug them as most of the new hardware supports WOL and the main boards sit there energized waiting for input. For the most part, that is how it apears when APM kicks in on my machine as there is nothing left running (no fans no nothing that is descernable). Granted, I haven't measured the power with a meter. Ah, correction, there is one indicator light on the mainboard that comes on when the power cable is connected and the power led is still on but yellow instead of green.

Hi,

I'm not wasteful, considered frugal by many. My preferences are to have access to my machines whenever. I'll pay the to have that.
I'm not a tree huger but do believe that waste should be something everyone tries to trim down. Power usage has been trimmed already but I will not shut things completely down (pull the plug). WOL is great, but something I choose not to use. Patience & convenience do play well when things are setup properly. Power management does play well when setup. I'll pay the few cents to have that.

Test benches are running all the time. Servers too!
As Al Gore shows by example, so I'll power in MY way.

All governments do this. If "they" want to "get you", they'll get you for something, anything. Note the trumped-up rape charges against Julian Assange. And MS probably aid the Russian authorities because otherwise they'd lose money. All corporations care ONLY about money. Those that claim to care about something else only do so because they're thinking long-term about what will help their bottom line.

You make that sound as if it were bad.

And you thought Russia was democratic since 1991. Apparently, Mr. Putin is trying to undo what Gorbachev did that was so beneficial for the Russian economy.

Notice the title of my blog? It has the pun "MicroSSoft" in it... Here is what that "SS" stands for:

You're on the same page as I regarding M$.
