RJ11 and confusion

Hello, everyone!I dropped a message first time in this forum.

My friend could not connect to the Internet via broadband so I went to see what's the problem.I found out the RJ11 telephone line has only 2 wires in both end of cords. So I was wondering....is it normal?is that the reason why he couldn't connnect to the Internet?

When I got home,I found out that my RJ11 has more than 2 wires in the cable. It has not only "white" & "green",but also other color.Do you guys have any knowledge on RJ11?Would you mind guiding me a little bit? Thanks.

Really a of cable.

Don't know if phones are the same in Hong kong as here in UK but they normally only use two wires for the carrier signal.

In the US we only use the two in the middle, usually red and green. There may be up to 6 wires in a RJ11 line, but they are ususally for special purpose applications. I run on DSL without a problem.

http://handyboard.com/faq/display.php?key=rj11

that link lays out one standard for RJ11. that will alow for up to 2 lines in 1 RJ11 jack. This also can alow for running xDSL and voice over the same jack.

RJ14 = the same as the RJ11, but always has 4 lines (2 twisted pairs) in it were the RJ11 can have either 1 pair or 2.

RJ45 is your standard ethernet connection with 4 pairs of twisted pair.

hope that helps some.
