Actually, a lot 1960's English pop is quite light/jolly and clearly sung.
Start with The Beatles (obviously) especially the early stuff ...
I would also like to add that if you google the lyrics to a song (lots of sites out there), then watch the youtube or listen to an audio recording, it all becomes a lot clearer and 'tunes' your ear to be able to pick up other tracks more easily.
A lot of Jazz/soul/blues music especially again early stuff eg pre 1970s is clearly sung because the words were important to the artists/writers.

Lots of good music I've heard, that I didn't actually understand at first (try Irish stuff, for example...).
i second that, quite a few of my favorite songs are in Japanese, and I don't speak a word of Japanese (well, maybe a word or two but not enough to understand the lyrics by a long shot) IMHO music isn't just about understandable lyrics, it's about the whole experience of melody, voice, instrumentation etc.., lyrics in my book are only a small portion of what makes music enjoyable.

as for songs i would recommend (in english of course )?
evenescence, wake me up (bring me to life)
within temptation, never ending story
cranberries, will you remember
decemberists, engine driver
decemberists, eli the barrow boy

My :

I think what a lot of this comes down to is whether you "listen for the message" or "listen for the melody". I'm guessing that in Anisha's case, she "listens for the message" (correct me if I'm wrong ), whereas others in this thread tend to "listen for the melody" more.

As for myself, I'm a little bit of both.

My teacher played with Wes once in an informal jam session. Tony remembers Wes telling him that his attack was too hard.

If you need to see the lyric for a song, try here:

You don't have to be a non-native speaker of English to have a problem with some accents. Normally, I'd have no problem with a US accent but I've noticed some younger Americans, particularly women, are getting very incomprehensible. The blonde in CSI Miami, for example (I only watched it once, honest )
