Well, I showed my sister (someone who could care less about most computer related stuff). She was expecting another boring thing, but when the windows slid out to the side, she was surprised. What really got her, however, was the ability to add notes to the back of projects. From that point on, she thought it was pretty cool. We talked about it's potential for another ten minutes or so, pretty much a world record for a computer topic with her.

That's gotta mean something.

Well, it seems that the larger proportion of posts on this thread are from "IT enthusiasts". And notice I don't use geek/nerd/whatever phrases (except for this illustration).

I'm quite happy to just have things working. I don't really care how it works (yes, it's fair to say I've had to learn a shitload of stuff in the how it works department, but that's the necessity of wanting to not HAVE to use microsoft product's - moral's ethics etc etc).

But personally, I like "eye candy", it amuses me. If I could be bothered to learn how to, I'm sure I'd be churning out themes, colour schemes, images, etc etc - I'm just too lazy

And yes, not only is it a VVV smart desktop, but the animation/3D stuff looks excellent as well.

regards

John

They finally replied, they put me on a mailing list and probably on the beta testers list. I suggest anyone wanting to snag a copy ASAP to write to that e-mail at the end of the demo video.

*Rubs Hand* ooooh, can't wait.

And I STILL haven't managed to find anything a 3-d desktop does better than the traditional 2-d other than eyecandy.

Surely there must be SOME reason to get excited about it. It must give SOME kind of increased functionality, considering the amount of time & effort that's going into it.

Please, someboy, enlighten me: Other than "Look nice", what does it DO??

Absolutely nothing (say it again, huh)

Sun didn't produce it originally to be something we should all install and would eventually be installed by default on all distros, it was produced to say "hey, look at what Open Source work practices can do" and "look - we can do this".

The thing it's really for, and this functionality is very important, if you have too many resources free on your computer it will eat them and eat them and make your pc nice and slow.

Ok... there is a third dimension added to the desktop. This means more room. And since the desktop is running in a 3d environment already, running FPS 3D games wouldn't take up that much more resources.

And everyone keeps saying "It will be a resource hog". Have any of these people actually tried it yet? Probably not.

What about all the processor power is *might* use? Why does that matter if you idle 90% of the time your box is on.

Instead of judging a WM by what it might use... I'm going to actually try it out. Look for another post with my review.
