Basically, I had a thumb drive behaving badly, so I took a dd image of it. I was able to run foremost and photorec, but was unable to recover the one file I was interested in. I'm going to try scalpel tonight and see if I have better luck.
But I was also thinking of running Recuva from my XP box. The only problem is that it will only run on a mounted device (i.e. C:, D:, E:, etc). The image may be broken anyway (not mountable), but I was looking for a way to make the image show up as a mounted device just for feeding it into Recuva. This is where Windows drives me nuts because I can't treat a file like a device like I can in linux.
Anyway, I would use the original usb key, but I think it has given up the ghost since the power light no longer comes on when I plug it into anything and dmesg just spits out errors like it's a dead device.
Any ideas? It's not a huge deal if I lose the file. I just hate losing to a machine...
