mount dd image of usb key in Windows XP

Basically, I had a thumb drive behaving badly, so I took a dd image of it. I was able to run foremost and photorec, but was unable to recover the one file I was interested in. I'm going to try scalpel tonight and see if I have better luck.

But I was also thinking of running Recuva from my XP box. The only problem is that it will only run on a mounted device (i.e. C:, D:, E:, etc). The image may be broken anyway (not mountable), but I was looking for a way to make the image show up as a mounted device just for feeding it into Recuva. This is where Windows drives me nuts because I can't treat a file like a device like I can in linux.

Anyway, I would use the original usb key, but I think it has given up the ghost since the power light no longer comes on when I plug it into anything and dmesg just spits out errors like it's a dead device.

Any ideas? It's not a huge deal if I lose the file. I just hate losing to a machine...

Umm... couldn't you dd that image onto another thumbdrive?

IN theory, virtual machines could help you with this situation (i.e. mount disk dump in virtual machine, then run software from within the machine), but they most likely don't support mounting of disk dumps.

Duh! That's a great idea. Now I just have to dig through my junk pile for a usb key.
