Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 - Fatal install error

Hi sorry for the Windows question on a Linux board, but I need Visual C++ (6.0) for school. I also need Visual Studio .NET kinda for Xbox development, so I'd prefer to find a way where they can co-exist nicely on my single XP workstation.

I have a copy of Visual C++ 6.0 that I got from a deitel book. It works OK because I installed it on my laptop a while ago. When I try to install it on my desktop I get this error after I tell it where to install:

16 bit Windows Subsystem

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

Should I try uninstalling Visual Studio .NET 2003 first? I heard a 'better' way for them to co-exist is to install .NET first, than 6.0, but I dont need to program Xbox for a while, school is critical. Any help appreciated.

Nevermind, I got it. My windows guru of a roommate told me to search microsoft.com for "16 bit MS-DOS error" or something like that and the article told me to pop my XP CD in and execute these console commands

Code:
expand cd-rom:\i386\config.nt_ drive_letter:\system_root\system32\config.nt
expand cd-rom:\i386\autoexec.nt_ drive_letter:\system_root\system32\autoexec.nt
expand cd-rom:\i386\command.co_ drive_letter:\system_root\system32\command.com
It worked, unfortunately I got an itchy trigger finger and uninstalled VS.NET 2k3, I'll have to throw that back on soon. Grrrr....
