Dumb move on Microsoft's part. It is just going to provide further distraction from what should be their business - Windows and Office.
Then again, if it gets unwieldy enough, maybe MS will finally do what they've needed to do for a long time, split into separate businesses.
Pray for a US administration in 2009 that will get back to proactive supervision of monopolies, corporate greed, and other bad habits.
MS has a record of all manner of ills, but I'm not sure that "dumb" is one of them.......regardless, I would not trust them for or with anything right now.
MS has tried to start internet businesses before by buying up other companies and that didn't work....I don't know why they're thinking it will now.....
Google is a leader because they consistently come out with simple, high quality and innovative stuff. And MS seems to deliver the complete opposite, relying on the influence they have from their other businesses to get market share....this won't be any different....

So did Microsoft back in the days. Google is just enjoining a period that MS once did, where everybody loved it.
And Google being innovative? How exactly? Google is just buying the competition out like MS does: Pyra Labs/Blogger, YouTube, JotSpot... even DoubleClick for crying out loud.
Youtube is a clear example of this. Google has the Google Video. But the community around it was far to small when compared to youtube. Solution? Buy the competition (Youtube).
Google IS like Microsoft. They just want to monopolize different parts of the market (for now). And they are already getting a lot of criticism as well...

Ok, I agree with this. Especially the YouTube thing, I thought of that soon after I posted.
But MSN search can't find a damn thing I'm looking for, and GMail makes Windows Live Mail(R) (or whatever they're calling it these days) look like a steaming pile of.....something.
Google may be a big evil corporation too, but they do much better work.
