Linux works, Windows doesn't

Hello,

I've got a problem but not really sure what it is. I use to have Xp installed, but now I'm running on linux quite a while. I changed from linux to windows a few times, but now I want to install dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows7. Ubuntu works just fine. But Windows7 has a problem: It seems to install just fine, but when I start it up without the install DVD it comes to the loading scene(the windows logo) and just restarts my computer. It does that over and over again. A few times it gave me a bluescreen something like this:

STOP c000021a Fatal System error
0x00000000 (0xc0000001 0x001003a8)

System has been shutdown

I'm asking on linux forums because linux is the only thing that works on my computer at the moment. (also XP doesn't work anymore)

I suspected bad sectors, but when I ran badblocks it didn't find any.(I ran the extensive search, I found a command on this forums omewhere but can't find it again :P something like: badblocks 0x00 08x8 .... -nvs ...i think :P)

My HD isk MAXTOR 250GB 8MB SATA, if theat helps any.

Thanks for any help.

=)

PS: I suspect bad sectors because I have formated the disk so many times I lost count really.

Linux will recognize windows, whereas windows will only recognize windows.
So, you may have to reinstall both.
start with the windows install 1st, & then the ubuntu install 2nd.

That's assuming that you have your hdd partitioned the way that you want it.
otherwise, change that before you do anything else.
& backup any data from both O/Ss ...

Well. Formating the disk shouldn't cause bad sectors. Actually, a format (Not quick format) will mark bad sectors unusable, so in that case formating the disk should prevent bad sectors.

When it comes to the issue, I can't really understand why it should be a linux-matter. Do you have another disk you could use to debug? If grub succeed in starting Windows, then grub's job is finished. Windows can't even read linux partitions. Perhaps that is the issue? If you have another disk I would try to install windows 7 on that disk to see if it works. If that works, I would install linux and windows 7 to see if grub/linux partitions could have such an influence.

pierre2: The problem isn't installing both Ubuntu and Windows...The problem is making windows work.

Dinithion:I tried installing only windows. Forrmated the whole disk to NTFS and tried installing. But it doesn't help. When it comes to the loading screen it crashes.

Why I think this is a linux matter? Well..actually I don't.But since I don't have any other options than linux, I guess I'll have to fix it "the linux way" :P

And I have no other disk...If I had I'd just install windows7 on that disk and see if it works. If it does, there's something wrong with my disk. If not...well heaven help. :P

Peace

Did you try redownloading Win7 and burning this new version? It could be the download, it could be the disk.

Maybe you should get help from a Windows 7 forum. It looks like windows 7 is not completely installed. Maybe you should reinstall and choose to install everything.

But seriously, have you heard of:
A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING AND EVERYTHING IN IT'S PLACE. If it doesn't work, you know it's place.

End

I have this error as well. Ubuntu 9.10 installs perfectly, but Windows XP Prof SP3, Windows Vista Ultimate x86_64, Windows 7 Ultimate x86/x86_64 all can't install. XP SP3 installation just shuts down after it loads the installation files whereas the others just blue screen right after the installer loads and give me exactly the same errors.

At first I thought it was a ram thing, since that's where the install temp files go. I did Memtest86+ on my 4Gb of RAM and it would shutdown suddenly. But when I did RAM tests on each 2Gb stick individually, it was fine.

I thought it was a HD problem, but scans came out good and Ubuntu runs well.

Then I hypothesised that it's a BIOS problem not excepting x86_64 architecture. But my Windows XP SP3 is x86.

I'm going to try a DBAN on the entire hard drive and see if that helps. All this points to a registry problem that didn't get cleaned off properly when I reformatted the disk.

EDIT: DBAN reports a bad sector on the hard drive. I think the registry problem spiked the drive and it just damaged exactly where the registry data is. I will try a 'slow' re-format to cover the bad sectors.

Why are you ignoring that memory problem and looking for other issues?

Try (1) 2 GB stick...If each stick works by itself but not both, your motherboard may be going out.

Basically, I think it's a boot sector virus or bad sector. Anyone can recommend a tool to wipe a boot sector?

Boot a live cd and then type
sudo bash
dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/hda1 bs=256 count=2

And so that completely wipes it out? What about doing a slow format to cover up bad sectors? fdisk?

I saw that the first time. The fact that the memtest fails with both dimms in place means you do have a ram problem (maybe a dimm is bad even though it shows no symptom alone. Maybe the problem is in the portion of the motherboard that connects to the dimms).

That theory does not in any way fit the symptoms you described.
