What exactly does this mean and what are its limitations?

Mostly a buz word ( sales tool ) to help jack up the price of something like cars, paintings ....
Since there are only a limited number of these made, you need to quickly get one before the supply runs out.

Put two words and their meanings together, that's what they mean.

limited = The greatest or least amount, number, or extent allowed or possible.
edition = One that closely resembles an original; a version.
