I hope you guys dont do this....

Okay I was just in Ft Wayne Indiana of all places to visit a friend and I stopped at a Starbucks for coffee. Anyway there was this cute girl there with a laptop just having coffee and I guess surfing or whatever and there was this guy there who kept starring at her and what not. Anyway the girl got on her cellphone telling whoever was on the other end that she was having problems with her laptop not starting up correctly and going slow. Well the guy goes over there and goes into a big spill about spyware, viruses and such and then he tells her she should use Linux and goes on to tell her the advantage of linux over windows. Well at first this girl is interested and he even helped her with a few things on her computer but then he kept going on and on and on about linux and how Microsoft and their products sucked and such and it got to a point after like an hour where she didnt want to hear anymore of his nerd ramble and finally told him she has to get some work done. He keeps on "you should switch, give me your email and maybe I could tell you some more things..blah blah" she started looking at me like get this guy away from me.

Anyway I was just laughing about the situation because this guy just went overboard trying to convert this girl who just wanted to do her schoolwork.

LOL!!!

Yeah, being a zealot will get you nowhere. I simply sit here at work and show people my new laptop with SuSE 9.3 installed. I never get too over anxious, because I know most people (even many IT folks) don't have much a clue about why they should change.

I just wait for people to come to me. My girlfriend was won over by Linux because of Tux and OpenOffice! Whatever! She's been using Mandrake now for a year, haha! My sister, I just gave her a computer with Linux on it as her first experience at 6 years old. She was raised on a Linux comp, so now she execute full commands at 10 years old. My mother uses Linux because she justs goes on gAIM for MSN Messenger and checks her email with Thunderbird, my father is a hardcore gamer, so no conversions there. You get a lot more respect as a linux geek if you don't have to act like a prophet!

I think it was the fact that he kept on and on talking about something that she was no longer interested in hearing and doing it to try and score points with her but instead it became a turn off for her. Enjoyed my time driving through Indiana though. Interesting state.

He probably would have gotten her attention if he just swifly walked by, mentioned she should run Linux if she's having problems with Windows and went on about his way...

But yeah, I lived in Indianapolis for 4 years.. I hope to never live in that state again, I'll avoid it at all costs if I have to. Probably has to be one of the most boring places to live. No offense to those living there now, I still have some family there..

I've always looked at this way: Linux and the GNU philosophy is about freedom of choice, if someone wants to use Windows for whatever reason then they're free to make that choice.

Most I'll do is when and only when someone starts complaining about spyware and how their machine keeps crashing is tell them there is other OS software about that are more stable and reliable and that spyware is generally of no concern.

I live in Kentucky. I love KY but I hate KY if that makes sense. There really isnt a whole lot to do because I've visited Chicago, SanFrancisco, LA, NY etc and well Louisville just feels so small in comparison. My friend lives in FT Wayne and I was just surprised by the fact that its the second largest city in Indiana. Indianapolis is not bad, kind of like Columbus, Louisville etc. One of those cities that arent too big and too small but then again there's not much else around.

Proving once again that "Down with Microsoft! Use Linux!" Is not a good pick-up line...

My original motive (aside from the fact that I HATE WINDOWS!) for switching to Linux was so that I could do my schoolwork, an added bonus is that we only use Microsoft products at my school, so it irritates my ICT teacher when I give him a Floppy disk containing work all in OpenOffice.org format!

To continue the off-topic, MY least favorite state is Minnesota. The 2 years I lived there were absolute HELL, especially since that's where I met my ex. Oddly enough, my wife also lived there for 18 months and absolutely adored it; she wants to go back to visit regularly. I can't get away from Minnesota to save my life!

Interesting side-note, I've had success with the "use Linux" type pick-up lines! Of course, I think my wife just took pity on me, but it still worked!

Now you were not staring at him watching him stare at the girl were you? That kind of stuff scares me, in school there was this guy that like kept on watching me and said things like "were you were looking at her ***?"
linux is to dificult for anyone like that to install, lot of the kids i know can't even install MSN messenger

Your ICT teacher is soft, if I were to hand in some work that wasn't compatable with the university software, like that I would get a big fat 0 and rightly so!
