Getting closer

Ok, used winME disk to format/fdisk hard drive then reinstalled mandrake 10.0 and have it up and running gret, now trying to learn linux as well as find a fast {B}SIMPLE{?B} way to set my linux box up as a home network server connected to my HUB/cable modem with 5 clients to hook to it (all of which are using MS windows <YUCK!>). Any suggestions?. I have been looking at APACHE2 but feel as though I am trying to learn the ancient HEBREW LANGUAGE! I need something that acts like it is talking to a 5 year old, btw I am 29. Matter of fact, I could name of several forgotten languages that look more simplified to learn than most server apps./docs I have looked in to. When I installed mdk10.0, it installed some server program, just not sure which due to the fact I was half asleep/half dead and am always 100% moron any assistance and I would be greatful.

P.S. is this size signature more suitable? and disturbed junkie clow is not a band, it is the name I write guitar riff/bass riffs/write lyrics/peoms/draw pictures/paint/write stories under. also use Gypsy and a writers name.

Juggalo, on the other hand is a group of ppl who really don't give a fok bout anything. Broght to Light and made popular by ICP (aka Insaine Clown Posse)

Laters ppls and thanx much for patientce with me.

I lowered it from 24 to 9, not sure why signature is still so large. Sorry.

Try to set the fontsize to 3 or so.
I believe , 9 is still above the max. threshold.
The fontsizes for this board range from :
1 to 4 ....

Here have a look at the diagram on this page

http://www.ipcop.org/1.4.0/en/instal...iguration.html

is that the sort of thing you want ?
if so
go for Smoothwall or IP Cop or similar
( Astaro Linux, Monowall ( BSD based ) etc )
as they are set up to do just this
and usually only take 40 - 60 mins to set up
just make sure to read all the documentation first

if you want to play with linux then maybe consider
dual booting Win with Mandrake
again read first

My network is set up almost exactly like the green zone
in the diagram, I use Smoothwall as my firewall / gateway

hope this helps

Pretty much, what I am trying to do is to connect a hub to my compaq (with linux mandrake on it) and my cable modem to my compaq. Then branch off 5 computers using ms windows from the hub. I have 2 NIC's in my compaq and I have a 5 port hub. I have all the cat5e cable I need. Now all I need is the directions on how to set up my linux to recieve/send the signal of the cable modem as well as the 5 clients. I know a little bout networking just not linux. And I know a little bout computers. I have worked on computers with ms windows since bout 1996. I, at one time, had a linux server set up on this network using a 133mhz packard bell with 16mb of RAM. I did not set it up, my friend did it and I am having trouble getting in touch with him this time. The 133mhz was a pure text linux system setup and all I knew how to do was reboot it lol and login/logout. This time, I am attempting to put graphical linux on a 466mhz compaq with 128mb of RAM so that I may learn some about linux in the process, as well as learn some along the way of having a linux OS to tinker with. I plan to obtain a mandrake 10.0 guide as soon as I can get the money, unless anyone knows of a free way to get it? I bought my 4disk set of mandrake of ebay and it did not come with any docs and therefore screwed me over on it lol. If anyone knows where I can get a fee mandrake guide, I would apprieciate it and would be able to figure all this out on my own which is what I would really love to do. Thank you all for you assistance and patience with me.

While it is possible with Mandrake, you need to know what to configure etc etc.

If you are that new to the game, then I would strongly suggest either Smoothwall or IP Cop which have free downloads.

Just download the documentation first and have a good read before doing anything. Both distros have excellent set-up and maintenance docs in PDF, and are worth printing out so you have a hard copy.

While I currently use smoothwall myself, I would probably recommend IP Cop. Mandrake is a good desktop distro but if you want it to be a server then you have to install certain modules and configure them where-as SW & IPCop are ready to go after installation.

Again I stress - read the docs first. Both have good general docs on networking as well.

live long and prosper

IP Cop and Smoothwall ( and other similar ) make a great firewall , but are not servers, so if you want a good server software distro have a look at SME Server 6

you would preferably sit a server behind a separate firewall as is the case in the diagram I linked to b4, however SME Server does have a firewall.

Again read the docs first, heres the link

http://contribs.org/modules/phpwiki/

If you have any further questions, rock on over the the networking part of this forum, and post there. I also learnt a hell of a lot just browsing there when I was setting up my network.

good luck

XavierP, Lot of ppl who do not know bout the juggalos. Did you ever play M.U.D. ? Your name is very familar to me, use to group with a player on a game called either basternae or duris with a guy named xavier. Hrmmm. Welp, have solved the problem with the home network though ppls, we decided F##K it and bought a router. I still have a few questions that some of you might know though. Does anyone know if Linspire (aka Lindows) is as safe as linux when it comes to virus's? Father wants an OS to put a peer2peer program on where he can D/L songs/movies off the web and so I was thinking Linspire is more suited to the windows atmosphere for him. And if so, anyone know where I can get a free copy of Linspire? I had Lindows 4.5 but it got lost when I moved from Alabama to Georgia which pissed me off royally. Again, any help would be appriciated by this royal
