Could it be the distro or earlier KDE that's faster?

I used to run JAMD, which ran KDE 3.2 but now I'm running Lorma which has KDE 3.1. Although I loathe it's ugliness, the whole system is considerably faster than what I'm used to. So could it be the different KDE or just maybe the distro (which is rh 9 based just like JAMD).

KDE 3.2 should be quite a bit faster than 3.1, especially with konqueror preloading turned on.
