Of course I do follow cricket, these weird names, I don't remember !!

and Now I do think, rather than passing our time here, it'll be better if we could try and solve some zero-reply threads

Or more accurately the Hindu Nationalist government decided to rename the cities. This didn't happen until the 90s so it wasn't a function of independence which happened nearly 50 years earlier but rather of a certain political party during its brief stint in power.

"Bombay" and "Calcutta" weren't exactly "English" words but more likely the best approximation English speakers could make of the original names.

It's a bit like renaming Peking to be Beijing. It might matter to the local people but not to native English speakers because the names already sounded exotic to our ears.

P.S. I spent 5 weeks in Mumbai right after India and Pakistan decided to test nuclear weapons. I stayed at the Oberoi and ate at the Taj Mahal Hotel so it was weird to see the attacks on those places a couple of years ago.

He "confessed" and later recanted his confession. It was amusing to me when I was in India that in the paper it seemed everyone that was arrested "confessed" to whatever they were charged with. I joked to my colleagues that if any of us got arrested for anything while there we should immediately confess even if we didn't do it as it was clear that we would be "encouraged" to do so eventually.

I won't bite on your saying "launched by Pakistan" since their government denies being involved.

Of course, the Pakistan government also denied the following matters:
1. Being involved in the twin towers attacks
2. Having sheltered Dawood Ibharim
3. Having promoted the terrorist group Al-Quieda
4. Paving way for the terrorists to get in to Kashmir
...
...
