Linux appears to be on a real run right now as far as awareness in the public conciousness is concerned. Since the only real way for Linux to spread the message is by word-of-mouth, it's a gradual process, but one that seems close to reaching critical mass.
Apple has got to be really concerned about that. MS can bluster and spread FUD, but the partial result of that is even more visibility for Linux. That hurts Apple more than it does MS, since they have such a small user base, and can't really afford to lose any of it.
I don't know how to prove it, but my suspicion is tha Linux has already supassed Apple in Desktop penetration, and will soon be recognized generally as the 2nd most used OS on personal desktops.
