Good move for both companies, and for Linux IMHO.

I don't like the idea...They are both great companies that produce great products. But......

I don't forsee them having 2 programs that do the same thing... (i.e. - Freehand/Illustrator or Dreamweaver/GoLive!)

I learned on the Macromedia products and understand them very well...

Also..I fail to see how this benefits Linux in any way... the only thing either companies have Linux versions of is Flash Player and Acrobat Reader...

Yep. Less competition around, probably reducing innovation.

Not that strange. Usually they go together, especially when creating fancy homepages: Dreamweaver for the "mouse-programmers" and Photoshop for image editing.

I doubt it will benefit Linux in any way though. It will if we start taking more market with the Gimp or equivalents, then we will see some expensive ports to Linux. I don't like any fancy editors as Dreamweaver and Gimp does a pretty great job for me, and it's free. If both companies shut their doors tomorrow, won't affect me at all.

For me " ... this is all a moo point. it's like a cow's opinion. It just doesn't matter. It's moo."

Not sure about the buy out but I know it's not good for employees... I use Dreamweaver and photoshop in windows and are both good programs. If Macromedia did replace Fireworks with Photoshop as there integrated photo editor it would be a killer program.

But then again I don't use half of the features on either of them so I guess it would not matter much. I think Gimp does a great job for a PhotoShop replacement but Have not an HTML editor as good as Dreamweaver.

It wasn't really a pun towards microsoft, but it can apply to microsoft as well. If MS can't compete with a company they usually buy it out and kill off the competition. The suprising thing is that they continue making rubbish products even after getting good technology from whoever they bought out.

I use to be a heavy Photoshop user and couldn't wing myself to use the gimp but after forcing myself to never use photoshop as I don't have any windows boxes around any longer, I found that I love the gimp more than photoshop. And of course I use to use dreamweaver while in Windows alongside it but like editing in vi at all times nowadays..

I'm with you trickykid!. I think Photoshop and Dreamweaver are good products, but the main reason I switched to Gimp and vi is because I could not afford those applications, and I just didn't like the feeling to use the "Kazaa Edition" of those.

Gimp's interface seemed a bit odd at first, but once you get the hang on the shortcuts things start to get pretty neat .

And vi is the gram-pa of all text editors and, as Gimp, odd at first, but when you master it it rocks the big one

Well, for me its GIMP and Quanta. I never liked dreamweaver so didn't use it much. For graphics, I wasn't much of a photoshop user though its a very good app, I preferred paintshop pro.

I'm currently redesigning my website from scratch. I'm fully using only Linux. I also have the freedom to test the site offline thanks to Apache web server (my site is a forum using PHP and MySQL). I'm totally using only GIMP for the images and Quanta Plus to do the editing. So far I'm 100% satisfied with the results. Quanta Plus can really get you writing great HTML code within minutes and the CSS editor is also simple yet powerful. Nothing gets better than that.''

Believe me, Photoshop is great, but if you can put up with a few missing filters and plugins, GIMP is more than an adequate replacement.

Quanta Plus is also an excellent software and it's free. For those who don't need WYSIWYG, Quanta comes the closest to offering the total power. Not used Bluefish so much, but I guess Bluefish is also an excellent editor.

Who needs WYSIWYG editors when the code editors out there which are free do such a great job?
