RPM Install Experiences -- Sequences
I am very new to Linux, but have other operating system experience. Here are my observations and frustrations.
I used the Fedora Core4 dvd to install the product. It does it as expected.
I used "up2date" to search for updates, and found many new patches.
On the first go-around, I had 256meg memory in the pc, with 64meg stolen for video card. Response was awful. After the updates some things worked, others did not.
On second go-around I added 512meg of memory, response now normal.
After additional memory was installed, I thought that RPM problems with the previous installs were due to lack of memory, and chose to do a a fresh install. Then fearing problems with "select all" for installs, I did the RPMs for packages from "a to j". When that completed, I installed the remaining packages in the list.
From an error message perspective, there were none, and it appears that the install went OK. But... wanted to search for "netconfig". Doing a find / ... yielded the message that /proc has corrupted entries, and I should use the command find / ... -noleaf.
How do I correct the /proc problem?
How do I get the sound package "totem" to work? The error messages are meaningless in the sense that they lead the support person nowhere.
Sound works for normal user, but not for root. Totem does not work for either.
MY QUESTION.
Is there a difference to Core4 if rpms are installed in other than a chronological sequence? RPMs in my view should only be package aware, and not install sequence aware.
My next question is, How do I backup the install to DVD? I have a DVD burner on the system.
