Display too Bright

My display is too bright. I have an ATI radeon 9000 with a Gateway Vivitron 1776. The the display is so light, I can't even read the lighter text on many web pages. I've messed with the brightness and contrast on my monitor, and that's not the problem. I have also gone into the display settings and tried a few different gateway monitors, all with the millions of colors selected, and the situation remains the same; my screen is too light. Oh, also when I go to the logout screen and the screen darkens, everything shows up fine, but just when the logout options are up. I am wondering if there is a way to change the brightness with fedora itself, or maybe there is some other workaround. Thanks for listening, and I would appreciate any help or suggestion given. Cheers.

Im having the same problem. Im running Fedora Core 1 with a Raden 9000 and the display is extremely bright, but only in X. During the startup sequence that isn't run in X everything is fine. I have used xgamma to lower the gamma to 0.5 witch helped somewhat but lowering it further just makes everything look bad. Would be thankful for any helpful information.

This may help.

Remember to get the correct settings from you monitor manual.

Welcome to LQ, both of you

It worked! I had to set the gamma to 0.30 0.30 0.30 to get it working. Thank you much XavierP. It's always funner to work with an os you can see.

blank screen

Hello, I found this site via google for Linux. http://www.google.com/linux for those who don't know. I noticed that fukumdaryl is using the same monitor I am. I've tried various times to get X to work on my Vivitron 1776 with no joy. Would you be so kind as to post your config file so I can see what I'm missing? I'm trying to run SUSe 8.2 with an ATI all-in-wonder VE and really want to get away from Winduhs. Thanks a bunch.
