Overly bright video?

I am having a problem with playing video files in Xine, Kaboodle, etc on my Slackware Linux box. The videos play but they are bright to the point that the picture is barely watchable (as if there is a bright white screen over the video) does anyone know how to fix this?

you could probably check if there was a brightness control in one of the programs?

$ man $application

Maybe there's some linux brightness control that I havn't found yet (for example, if you want to change the volume, simply run 'rexima')...
