"yum -y upgrade" FC4->FC5 killed my machine!

Hi All,

I recently upgraded my FC3 machine to FC4 which was fine and then did the same from FC4 to FC5. After rebooting in to FC5 rhgb displayed but then gdm refused to do anything (monitor light flicked as if it was going from sleep to in use). I have rebooted in to run level 3 and can start X with startx (windowmaker is my window manager) but no programs run!

I think somethings seriously f'ed up! Here's some example errors from trying to run stuff:

[root@U4ea log]# firefox
GConf Error: Configuration server couldn't be contacted: CORBA error: IDLmg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0
/usr/local/internet/firefox/firefox-bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgnomevfs-2.so.0: undefined symbol: g_thread_pool_set_sort_function

[root@U4ea log]# gnome-terminal
gnome-terminal: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgnomevfs-2.so.0: undefined symbol: g_thread_pool_set_sort_function

[root@U4ea log]# gdm
/usr/sbin/gdm-binary: symbol lookup error: /usr/sbin/gdm-binary: undefined symbol: g_access

Also it appears that gconfd isn't running - could this be related?

Does anybody have any idea what's happened? Or at least what commands I can run to try and debug this issue? I really don't want to have to re-install.

Thanks in advance,

Haydn.

I forget the command for Fedora but you can reconfigure X from the command line. I believe the command is located under "x" or "X". So from the command prompt type x or X and then hit the tab button for all of the "X" commands. You should find the command you need after some trial and error.

To be honest. It's best just to reinstall the OS. Upgrading you OS in the nature that you are preforming presents a lot of issues. You have to considering that you are upgrading an entire Os via yum. Which has will will cause problems. Just burn a couple of ISOs of Fedora 5 and you will be running the latest code.
