why wont ls work correctly? it's blank!

ls doesn't display file or directory names at all. even as root -when i type: ls -CF /

all i get is: / / / / / / / / /

it's the same with every ls command. ls -la does name the .hidden files but the regular file and directory names are blank

i'm not totally new to linux -so it's frustrating that my first linux web server (running fedora core 5) is not running the simpleist ls command right.

Try it without -C and see what happens.
Probably uses an alias for "ls" - what does "alias" list ???.

Solved! Thanx

syg00 - dude you nailed it

after typing the alias command i can see that...

alias ls='ls --color=tty'

AND since in my brilliant wizdom i had changed my terminal window to dark blue w/ white letters...

ls is displaying regular files in dark-blue -almost exactly the same color as my background -SO it was all there all the time; it just appeared to me to be blank. (if you highlight the text one can make it out)

thank you very much
