but getting a command 'Could not find icon installation directory, icons not installed'. I haven't used 'i' install because I don't want duplicate packages, I want to update the old with the new. How do I get on the right track from here?
The standard flag to update an rpm is -U. You might also want the -vh options. From what I remember, if you're having trouble and want to overwrite previous files, you could also try --replacepkgs.
I used the -U option and got the following response:
[root@localhost java]# rpm - U opera-8.52-20060201.6-shared-qt.i386-en.rpm
package opera-8.52-20060201.6 is already installed
So, it seems that when I selected download from the Opera site, somehow the process installed Opera. I can see that the old version is still in my directory. I'd like to safely remove it, any ideas?
You are trying to install? In this case, you do not need to remove the version that's currently there. If you want to remove it, what happens when you put in 'rpm -evh opera-8.52-20060201.6-shared-qt.i386-en.rpm'? That should uninstall it, and you can then reinstall. The output of 'rpm -q opera-8.52-20060201.6-shared-qt.i386-en.rpm' might also be informative.
If you get an error saying that the package is not installed (even though you get an error saying it is already installed when you try it with -U), this is where the --replacepkgs flag comes in useful. Try 'rpm -Uvh --replacepkgs opera-8.52-20060201.6-shared-qt.i386-en.rpm'. It should overwrite the previous installation files, and the rpm database should be up to date.
However, unless there is a good reason you want Opera I'd advise Firefox, because it appears in the basic repositories and you can upgrade it easily using yum. If you want mouse gestures and so on, there are a number of very useful extensions available (I particularly recommend "Mouse Gestures" and "Tab Mix Plus").
