Opera Install

Downloaded the latest version of Opera (7) and went with the .tar.gz extensions but Slackware said that Opera did not have a .tgz extension . Is there a conversion capability ..... then I downloaded Opera with the .RPM extension and used the rpm2tgz conversion and Slackware said that opera was not an .RPM extension. On both accounts they were wrong. How can I either install Opera with a .tar.gz extension or with the .rpm extension. ANy help would be appreciated.....

All I did was download from the Opera host site .... and Slackware was not listed as a specific distibution .... sooooooo - I downloaded the .tar.gz file (according to the Slackware essential book it should be compatible) but Slackware just did not seem to recognize the .tar.gz extension ... which is why I tried the .rpm method and that didn;t work either ...... right now they are both in sitting in the /var/log folder.

Rrrright... now, what did you do BESIDES
downloading archives, in a more detailed
description?

I have installed
Code:
.tar.gz

QT Shared SuSE/Debian/Others 3.4 MB
on more than one Slackmachine.

Cheers,
Tink

OK ..... after I downloaded the .tar.gz version ....... I tried the installpkg.opera thing and got the message that opera was not a .tgz ............ same thing on the .rpm - - - I tried the rpm2tgz opera.rpm and was advised that opera might not be a rpm package. i went into the /var/log files and checked both version of opera and they were both at the 3.4 or so size and a multitude of files. I tried to find more in the documentation that I have (Slackware linux essentials) for more ideas but came up empty handed ..... thought you guys might be of some help.

OK ...

Back to your tar.gz, then.

There's a big difference between
you common tar.gz and a Slackware-tgz

The latter are packages for binary distribution,
using Slack's package tools. (Even though
some people who make tar.gz's use the extension
tgz, too).

However, the opera-one isn't a slack-package.

What you need to do with this one is just
untar it
Code:
tar xvzf opera*.tar.gz
Then cd into the directory it creates and run
./install.sh

Cheers,
Tink

Installing Opera is easy, it's just that it is ***not*** a Slackware package!!

Just do the following:

su root <enter_root_password>
tar -xvzf <name_of_the_opera_package>
cd <name_of_the_opera_directory>
<enter_name_of_install_script>

all you have to remember is this:
1. do not use installpkg
2. look at the procedure described on the opera web site...

[It works -- I know, I installed it on my machine...]

I saw where Netscape had gone up to 7.1 Actually , they made it impossible not to notice. I am just partial and biased toward Opera. Netscape was never a favorite of mine. I think Mozilla is on a new version ... or beta version.,.... also. Tks, -Emmett

Some say mozilla -----some say netscape. All the same to me. My company uses Netscape and maybe that helps to explain my bias against Netscape. I equate it with work. I of course refuse to use IE. And I just like Opera and the gooey fluff of their skins and toolbars. Call me Shallow !!! Thanks for the reply .........
