I just installed a fresh copy of Fedora Core 1 on my laptop (I hear its more stable than FC2), and Im currently trying to run up2date to update some of my packages. However, when I select my channels and click forward, a dialog box comes up and says "Fetching rpm header: XFRee86-4.3.0-55" and the little progress bar at the bottom stops about a millimeter after it starts, and it just hangs there forever. I know the download shouldnt take this long, I normally download at 350kbps+ on my cable modem, and this file cannot be that big. Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong?
Ive got Fedora Core 1 with 2.4.22 Kernel running off a fresh install on a Dell Inspiron 600m laptop.
The problem seems to be partially fixed maybe? Now instead of hanging on that one package, it downloaded about 15 packages and hangs about a third of the way through.
Distribution: Fedora Core 3, Suse Professional 9.2

Hi Corallis,
I have experienced the same problem before with Fedora 1 and 2... .After doing several research and googling, I have come out with a explanation for this stupid hang up of up2date.
The reason as i thought was the overloaded client trying to download the update from the only 1 default server (Redhat Nework or something...could remember exactly ). You could possibly fix this problem by redirecting the update server to mirrors. Open the Redhat Networl Configuration and then go to the server URL and look up in the below website to find an alternative mirror suitable for u:
Found out why this was happening - my up2date config was connecting to the standard RedHat/Fedora server for its updates, which probably every other Fedora machine is doing
So, in the interests of helping others out, here's my config file - this now works a treat and I'm downloading updates at around 60k/s
The config file lives in /etc/sysconfig/rhn/ and is called sources:
### this describes the various package repos up2date will look into
### for packages. It currently supports apt-rpm repos, yum repos,
### and "dir" repos
### format is one repo entry per line, # starts comments, the
### first word on each line is the type of repo.
### the defalt rhn (using "default" as the url means
### use the one in the up2date config file
#up2date default
### When a channel-label is required for the non up2date repo's,
### the label is soley used as an internal identifier and is not
### based on the url or any other info from the repo.
### an apt style repo, this time arjanv's 2.6 kernel repo
### format is:
### type channel-label service:server path repo name
judging from the URL you're using it appears you're running Fedora Core 1. I'm running FC2.
When you run the up2date app, do you do a select all packages and it completes? mine doesn't work that way and i get a bunch of dependency errors. i'm still trying to use yum as an alternative.
i noticed that if you are NOT logged in as root, but enter the root pwd in the pop-up authorization dialog box, and you had a lot of updates or where getting them from a slow site, then the root authorization you entered would time out (the little keys in your panel would go away).
i only use up2date while logged in as root, or i use yum manually.
Hello, I was using FC2 until the up2date went bonkers. I wasn't able to update most of the signature programs with that o.s. Up2date would freeze, hang, or lock, and I'd have to manually kill the program. Some of the more confusing things is that when you update the packages with up2date usually it breezes thru no problem. Where as specific packages are monsteriously huge and thus I would only be able to d/l 3 at a time. Depending on the time is another factor here.
I'm not really aware of the terminal route for Yum updating, and will look into this when I'm calmed from my brief one week experience with Fedora. Installing Java was a trick, but flash was a snyche, as was Real player 10 or better known as Helix project. I was using Mandrake 9.1 six months until I started having trouble with installing realplayer 10 and all the dependency issues. Real player 8 went bye bye and I couldn't access the program from any part of the command line. It would be nice if there was a uniform code structure for installations. I understand that now and will be a little more mindful of my approach to installing anything in the future.
I read the problems that everyone (including me) is having with up2date.
I read about twenty post same problem, it's like having an over crowded expressway I had left my machine on over night up2date was still locked, turned it off when I went to work.
After I read the posts I went home and went to fedora home page went to downloads, updates and to the download mirrors. Went or browsed to Duke first, FC/FC2/updates folder. highlighted the address bar in the browser pasted the address in Red hat network update manager address window.
SUCCESS!!!
I had to do this 3 times. After the first one (SMP kernel update 2 items separately). I tried to get the remainder and the site hung.
I changed to another mirror about half way down the list. It worked fine and was completed during the night and I finished it up in the morning.
I originally updated from FC1 and it was very buggy would not work.
Did a fresh full install of FC2, same problem very buggy would not work, lock up and video problems.
Did a custom install about 1/2 to 2/3 of a full install. Now that it is up2date I will go back and add more until it is full install.
I have to thank every one for the posts because the posts gave me the answer (especially one from thebutler4 post #5 8-14-04) and made me realize I was not losing my mind.
