Error running up2date

When I try to run up2date now I get the following error:

Could not find platform independent libraries <prefix>
Could not find platform dependent libraries <exec_prefix>
Consider setting $PYTHONHOME to <prefix>[:<exec_prefix>]
'import site' failed; use -v for traceback
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/sbin/up2date", line 10, in ?
import sys, os
ImportError: No module named os

I've recently installed the newest python and I've tried setting $PYTHONHOME to all sorts of values. I'm completely stuck, please help!

Cheers,
